Description: | Editorial Internship
Editorial internships are intended for qualified applicants seeking hands-on experience in literary editorial work—especially related to book publishing. Ideal candidates will have excellent communication and grammar skills, a strong interest and background in literary prose and poetry, and familiarity with Red Hen’s list and authors. Editorial interns works closely with the Associate Editor, Editorial Assistants and Production Associate to maintain Red Hen’s selective acquisitions process and refine and polish all written material put forth by the company. Responsibilities may include: assisting with submission management, such as reading and evaluating submissions, and sending rejections and query responses; copy-editing, proofreading, fact-checking, checking corrections to, and otherwise preparing manuscripts for layout; copy-editing and proofreading Marketing & Publicity materials; researching for various projects; providing general editorial support such as data entry, filing, scanning, database maintenance and upkeep, and other administrative duties; and providing general office support and upkeep as needed. Internship benefits include free workshops and presentations on various topics taught by our experienced staff; an intern luncheon and Q&A with our Managing Editor and Publisher; invites to Red Hen readings and events; complimentary books; and course credit, if applicable. Red Hen Press has served both local and national communities as Southern California’s largest nonprofit literary publisher for 20 years. Our mission is to discover and publish works of literary excellence, support diversity, and foster youth literacy. |
Length of Internship: | 4-6 months |
Requirements: | Qualifications
-Background in publishing (not required but strongly preferred) -Knowledge of contemporary literature -An ability to commit to 16–24 hours per week for 4–6 months -A completed or in-progress undergraduate degree in English, Creative Writing, or related field (at least 2 years completed by requested internship season) -Experience copy-editing and proofreading; knowledge of copy-editing/proofreading symbols -A meticulous attention to detail -A self-starting attitude and ability to maintain deadlines, multi-task, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment without close supervision -Excellent written and verbal communication skills -Excellent research abilities -Significant knowledge of grammar, syntax, and style -Computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, and Windows 7 |
